We are now accepting virtual auditions for PUP Fest 2025!
Junior Players and Kitchen Dog Theater started Playwrights Under Progress (PUP) Fest in 2002 as a new piece of Kitchen Dog Theater’s New Works Festival. An annual anticipated event, PUP Fest is also a component of the Dallas Playwriting Arts Collective (D-PAC), a partnership between Junior Players, Kitchen Dog Theater, and the Dallas Independent School District to provide innovative programs and opportunities for high school playwrights.
PUP Fest is your opportunity to star alongside high school students from across DFW in a brand-new, never seen before, play, while also being taught and mentored by some of Dallas' most renowned professional playwrights and actors! This festival will feature 6 different short plays, written by local high school students, performed in the format of a staged reading and audiences will get to see these performances for FREE!
Here are some common Q&A about PUP Fest:
- What is a staged reading?
- A "staged reading" is a theatrical presentation where actors perform a play by reading directly from the script in front of an audience, essentially acting out the story while holding the script. Our version of a staged reading includes costumes, props, lighting, sound, and some set pieces to really enhance the theatrical experience for our participants!
- Do I have to have previous acting experience?
- Not at all! PUP Fest features 6 different plays with different mentors, AND includes acting workshop classes outside of play rehearsal, making it completely adaptable to your experience level! These acting workshops fit every skill level and range from on-camera to improvisation to clowning! Whether you're a seasoned pro looking to perform something no one has ever seen before or completely new looking for a safe, fun, and educational environment to test the waters - we have the spot for you!
- How long is the rehearsal process?
- One week! PUP Fest 2025 will rehearse Monday, June 2 through Friday, June 6 from 11 am to 5 pm daily. The performance will take place on Saturday, June 7, with actors needing to be available from noon to 5 pm. As this is a short time period, minimal conflicts will be accepted - so be sure to mark your calendars off along with submitting your audition!
- How much does participation in PUP Fest cost?
- Absolutely NOTHING! Participation in PUP Fest is free and open to all current High School students!
