History and Mission
The mission of Junior Players is to encourage intellectual growth, mental well-being and the development of life skills in the youth of North Texas through mentoring, creative expression, and participation in dramatic and arts activities. This mission is accomplished through:
- Assisting elementary, middle, and high school children in an exploration of their creative potential in free after-school and summer programs throughout North Texas.
- Challenging and motivating teens from high-risk environments to creatively and verbally express their concerns in a non-violent manner.
- Providing professional training opportunities for high school students.
Junior Players has provided unique arts education programming to the youth of North Texas since 1955. Junior Players exclusively provides free arts education programs in local recreation and cultural centers, low-income housing developments, elementary, middle and high schools and through social service agencies serving at-risk youth. Junior Players' Discover Theater Summer Camps and Discover Ourselves After School Workshops focus on children ages 5 to 18 in underserved areas of the community. Junior Players' Discover Shakespeare program combines the best of local high-school acting talent with the professional skills of the Shakespeare Dallas staff in a teen production of Shakespeare presented in performances at Samuell-Grand Park Amphitheater. In collaboration with a variety of organizations, including Letot, Promise House and the Dallas Independent School District, Junior Players’ teen and Visions of Peace programs work with high-risk teens who are challenged to write about their life experiences, create and perform their own productions and resolve their conflicts through communication in a non-violent manner. Junior Players' Advanced Acting Workshops and PUP Fest program offer professional training in acting and playwriting for area high school students. Junior Players also offers its new Winter Musical Production and Fall Dance Production to North Texas teens with the opportunity to perform at the Dallas City Performance Hall and Dee and Charles Wyly Theatre.
